The IIT JAM exam for Biotechnology tests your knowledge across various scientific disciplines. The syllabus is broadly divided into four sections:
Biology (10+2+3 level): This section covers a wide range of biological concepts, including:
Taxonomy: Classification and naming of organisms.
Heredity and Genetic Variation: Mechanisms of inheritance, gene mutations, genetic disorders, and applications of genetic engineering.
Conservation Biology: Principles of conservation, threats to biodiversity, and conservation strategies.
Ecology: Interactions between organisms and their environment.
Evolution: Theories of evolution, mechanisms of evolution, and evidence for evolution.
Techniques in Modern Biology: Recombinant DNA technology, protein purification techniques, microscopy, and bioinformatics.
Chemistry (10+2 level): This section focuses on fundamental chemical concepts, including:
Structure and properties of Atoms: Atomic structure, periodic table, and chemical bonding.
Biochemistry: Structure and function of biological macromolecules (carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, nucleic acids), enzymes, vitamins, and hormones.
Chemical Equilibrium and Kinetics: Chemical reactions, rate of reactions, and equilibrium constants.
Metabolism: Metabolic pathways like glycolysis, TCA cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation.
Nitrogen Fixation: The process of converting atmospheric nitrogen into a usable form for plants and other organisms.
Mathematics (10+2 level): This section covers basic mathematical concepts, including:
Sets, Relations and Functions: Basic set theory, relations, and functions.
Algebra: Mathematical induction, logarithms, quadratic equations, sequences and series, matrices, determinants, etc.
Calculus: Differentiation, integration, and their applications.
Trigonometry: Trigonometric functions and identities.
Physics (10+2 level): This section covers fundamental physics concepts, including:
Mechanics: Laws of motion, work, energy, momentum, and rotational motion.
Properties of Matter: Solids, liquids, gases, thermal properties, and heat transfer.
Electricity and Magnetism: Electric charge, potential, capacitance, current, resistance, magnetic fields, and electromagnetic induction.
Waves and Optics: Wave properties, reflection, refraction, and interference of light.
